BioMotion70 blik

Sustainable high-gloss exterior lacquer with 70% renewable raw materials

December 2024

BIOmotion70 is a revolutionary, sustainable exterior lacquer with 70% renewable raw materials. This biobased alkyd lacquer is an important step towards a fossil-free world, without compromising on quality or sustainability. Its performance is comparable to Wijzonol SDT Ultra Hoogglanslak, with the same beautiful super gloss and long outdoor durability. The paint was developed in collaboration with raw material supplier Relement and binder supplier Worlée BV.

'OK Biobased' with three stars

We are constantly looking for raw materials that are worthy of the “Green Deal”. Raw materials that are biobased/biogenic and biodegradable, circular and less harmful to the environment. The secret of BIOmotion70 lies in a biobased molecule that we have developed together with other parties.

Traditional lacquers contain almost 30% solvent, which is entirely petrochemical, whereas BIOmotion70 contains only 4%. A high-quality lacquer with such a high percentage of renewable material is unique in the market and a big step towards a fossil-free (paint) world. BIOmotion70 already has a 3-star “OK Biobased” rating. This is unique in the market, and we haven’t even finished developing it yet.

Why alkyd instead of water-based?

The whole world seems to be switching to water-based paints. But water also has a downside. The availability of water is not unlimited. And we still know too little about the long-term preservation of water-based paints. The synthetic market remains important.

We sought to find the right balance between using as many renewable raw materials as possible on the one hand and maintaining extremely good outdoor durability on the other. We extensively tested the paint for drying, workability, flow and other properties, and it is in line with current solvent-based systems. The paint offers the much-desired “supergloss” and protects for up to 10 years.

The challenges

Innovation in our industry is highly complex, involving years of research and development into alternative raw materials. These must be biobased, biodegradable and circular. They must be less harmful to the environment and meet the requirements of the Green Deal. BIOmotion70 is not yet fully developed; further research is needed. In the foreseeable future, we see an opportunity to develop this paint into BIOmotion80, which will be composed of 80% renewable material.

Concept Paint pilots in practice

The first practical test of BIOmotion70 was carried out by painters from property maintenance company Koestr and SW Vastgoedverbetering. They painted exterior panels on the main building of Royal Van Wijhe Verf in Zwolle, the Netherlands
